P-Plate

P-plate refers to the period a Singapore driver must display a triangular probationary plate after passing the driving test — the first 12 months, with stricter rules and demerit consequences.

Newly licensed drivers in Singapore display a P-plate (Probationary) for the first 12 months. The rules: no driving offences accumulating to more than 12 demerit points; alcohol-related offences trigger immediate re-test; rules on accompanying passengers are stricter.

P-plate drivers are often first-time car buyers. The Singapore vehicle ownership cost (COE + ARF) means even a first car represents a major investment.

Workshop-wise, P-plate drivers often opt for moderate tint packages rather than top-tier — though many graduate to premium when COE renewal time comes.
